Final Fantasy is a RPG (Role Playing Game) for the NES that also has many sequels on many other platforms such as Sony Playstation. I believe it was the best RPG on the NES, and maybe the best RPG ever, due to the fact that it was a good game, and many other RPGs borrowed the same user friendly style of combat and exploration it used. If it werent for Final Fantasy, I believe that many of the best RPGs ever released wouldnt have been the same, because they wouldnt be trying to outdo this masterpiece.

Final Fantasy Q. & A.
Q. How can you say it is the best RPG ever, when longer, more sophisticated games, with better graphics and a better storyline exist?
A. True there are many better designed RPGs out in the world today, but almost all of these games have taken something from Final Fantasy. Not only that, but it is another one of those games that I always loved since my childhood. The newer games of today are all about graphics, storyline and the length of time required to beat it. Final Fantasy has bad graphics, little storyline depth, and is nowhere near as long as the new games. But there is a few advantages that it has over newer RPGs:
1) It allows you to create your own team of heroes, by mixing and matching from the different character classes available to you.
2) It leaves more to the imagination. Every kid needs to exercise their imagination, and what better way for me when I was younger than to play a game like this. The storyline was almost non-existent, which allowed me to make up my own story as I played. There was no depth to the characters, allowing me to create in my head a background and personality for each of my team members. And the length wasnt so long that I felt like it was hopeless to start over again.
Q. When choosing which classes of characters to have in my party, what do you recommend?
A. I think that the most well-rounded team for a beginner is a fighter, a Black Belt, a White Mage, and a Black Mage. The Fighter and Black Belt will deal out constant damage to your foes, while the White Mage heals your team, and the Black Mage sends a volley of spells at your enemies.
Q. What should I not do while playing this game?
A. Dont run away all the time! You only get experience from killing monsters, and you can only get stronger with experience. Nothing can be achieved by cowardice in this game.

Q. You said Final Fantasy was one of the best RPGs of all time because it was the "first" to include the things you mentioned. Yet Final Fantasy was just Square's knock-off of Enix's Dragon Quest to a tee! You know, I think the Dragon Quest/Warrior series deserves some credit TOO even though it's less well-known...
A. The one problem I had with Dragon Quest/Warrior is that you really have no control over who or what your character was. He was always the same thing. However, in later releases of the series, like Dragon Warrior IV, You at least had multiple party members to choose from. My favorite character in that game was Taloon (I believe that was his name) who was a merchant. It was one of the more creative twists I have seen in a RPG title to date. I will agree with you that the original Dragon Warrior is a classic NES title, but the open endedness of being able to create a different team of Light Warriors each time you go through the original Final Fantasy makes it stand out in my mind as the best RPG for that console. |
